Inclement Weather Decision Making Process
The District Administration considers many factors when deciding on late starts, early dismissals, or school-day cancellations. We want to share some of those with you to help provide perspective and timing on when the district will communicate school-day impacts.
-
- District Staff (Buildings and Grounds, Transportation, Superintendent)
- District staff on the road checking conditions from 3:30 - 4:45 AM.
- Check with the Crow Wing County Highway Department and observe plow routes and road conditions, and how those will impact buses picking up students across most of the district.
- Check weather forecasts, including:
- Precipitation rates
- Wind Speeds / Wind Chills
- Road temps
- Check with building maintenance staff on the status of parking lots/sidewalks into schools.
- Provide feedback to the Superintendent no later than 4:45 AM.
- Reichert Bus
- Check road conditions up to 4:45 AM.
- Advise the Superintendent on the buses' ability to navigate all roads (State Highways, County Highways, City and Township Roads).
- Superintendent
- Makes final decision based on feedback from observed conditions no later than 5:00 AM.
- Communicates decisions via ParentSquare and all other media systems (newspaper, TV stations, radio, social media, district website, etc).

-
- District Staff (Buildings and Grounds, Transportation, Superintendent)
- District staff will monitor changing weather conditions and ensure the ability to transport students from school to their homes safely.
- The same checks used in the Late Start process will be used to determine whether an Early Dismissal is required.
- Reichert Bus
- Advise the Superintendent on the buses' ability to navigate all roads (State Highways, County Highways, City, and Township Roads).
- Superintendent
- Makes a final decision on an early dismissal when conditions warrant, at any time throughout the day.
- District Staff (Buildings and Grounds, Transportation, Superintendent)

The district will follow the same process as Late Start/Early dismissal. A snow day cancellation will occur when it is determined that it is unsafe to transport students by bus, to drop students off at school, for students to drive to school, or for the district to keep buildings open safely during severe winter weather.
- Superintendent
- Makes final decisions based on feedback from observed conditions, no later than 5:00 AM the day of school.
- The district will cancel in advance if there are enough indicators that the weather will be severe enough for a school-day cancellation.
