Ready or not, here it comes—the 2018-19 school year is right around the corner! I am thrilled to begin my third year as your superintendent and to roll up my sleeves in effort to get all of the exciting work completed on behalf of our students at ISD 181. This coming year, there are so many thrilling new developments in our community and school district—it is a wonderful time to #BeBrainerd!

With the support of voters who approved the Blueprint 181 comprehensive, long-range facilities plan, our community is moving forward with a historic investment in its schools. The approval of Blueprint 181 was a vote of confidence in the work teachers, staff, parents and volunteers do, day in and day out, all year long to provide opportunity, innovation and success for all learners. As a result of your confidence, the District has been doing a significant amount of design work for Brainerd High School, Forestview Middle School, Harrison Elementary, Nisswa Elementary, and the new elementary in Baxter. In the very near future, design renderings will be recommended for approval by the Board of Education. As the school year progresses, we will continue that same work with additional district facilities. Our community has helped plant the seeds for our future, giving our kids a strong foundation to grow! To #BeBrainerd means to #BeGrowing.

The generosity of our community is not taken lightly and has inspired the District to emphasize, encourage and recognize random acts of kindness by our students and employees all year long. This generosity is not just in the form of big projects but in countless, everyday kindnesses and supports for our kids throughout the year, from volunteering in classrooms to donating to fundraisers to chaperoning field trips. To #BeBrainerd means to #BeGenerous.

From programs like the Brainerd High School and Forestview Middle School food/supply pantries to the annual Warrior Day of Service, volunteerism and giving back to the community is highly valued and genuinely appreciated. This summer was another example of unending volunteerism and collaboration that was completed by our generous students, staff and community. To #BeBrainerd means to #BeEngaged.

Howard Zinn, an American historian, playwright, and social activist said, "Small steps when multiplied by millions of people can transform the world." I believe that no one person is ever going to be able to make all of our hopes and dreams for the students of Brainerd Public Schools come true alone; we each must do our part and work together to make the difference our children deserve. To #BeBrainerd means to #BeSupportive.

I am very excited for the first day of school, which is Tuesday, September 4. If you haven’t already enrolled your child(ren), there’s still time! Please contact our Welcome Center at 218-454-6900 or stop into the Washington Educational Services Building at 804 Oak Street, Brainerd. Welcome back and have an absolutely wonderful and memorable year at Brainerd Public Schools!! Together, we grow. Together, we can #BeBrainerd. Together, we can all #BeWarriors!!
