As a newcomer to Brainerd Public Schools, I have been privileged to witness firsthand the incredible dedication of educators, staff, students and the larger community. Before meeting the Human Resources Director Interview Committee at the Washington Educational Services Building, I took time to explore the district, driving past schools, dining at local establishments, and engaging in conversations that highlighted the deep pride people feel in being a Warrior.
From Garfield Elementary to the Warrior Early Learning Center, from Forestview Middle School to Nisswa Elementary, I was struck by the rich 150-year history of the district and its commitment to preparing students for success in college, careers, and life beyond the classroom. After an inspiring interview process, I was honored to be hired by Superintendent Peter Grant and officially joined Brainerd Public Schools on Sept. 3, 2024.
Seeing Brainerd Public Schools from the inside
Over the past five months, I have had the opportunity to visit every school and center in the district, meeting the incredible people who make this learning community thrive. I have witnessed passionate educators shaping young minds, students engaging eagerly in their learning, and staff members going above and beyond to support student success.
I watched fourth graders confidently patrol street corners with the guidance of police officers who encouraged their leadership. At another school, I was welcomed by staff members who greeted students with dance and excitement. I saw parents dropping off their children with smiles, reassured by the supportive environment inside.
In every school, I met principals, teachers, specialists, secretaries, nutrition workers, custodians, volunteers and other staff who truly love what they do. I played outside with students during recess, participated in gym class activities and sang school songs alongside young scholars.
I saw firsthand how teachers are not just instructors but facilitators of curiosity, creativity and confidence.
Beyond the classroom, I encountered students eager to showcase their schools, proudly giving me tours and sharing their aspirations. I experienced kindness when a student noticed I looked lost in a hallway and offered to help. These moments reinforced that Brainerd Public Schools is a place where students are seen, heard, and empowered.
A community that champions education
From the moment you enter any Brainerd Public Schools building, there is an undeniable energy — a spirit of pride, purpose, and possibility. It’s evident in the faces of the students, the tireless dedication of educators and staff, and the unwavering support of the community.
What makes this district extraordinary is its culture of coming together for young scholars. Teachers continuously adapt and innovate to meet the needs of their students, ensuring that each child receives not only a quality education but also the care and attention they deserve. The commitment of all staff members extends far beyond academics — it’s about nurturing connections and fostering a sense of belonging for every student.
But what truly sets Brainerd Public Schools apart is its students. They are not passive learners; they are engaged participants in their education. Whether through hands-on projects, leadership opportunities, creative pursuits or giving tours, students here are being equipped with the skills and confidence to shape their futures.
Brainerd fosters an environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, and take risks. Students are taught that their voices matter and that their ideas have value.
Investing in the future
The magic of Brainerd Public Schools extends beyond its classrooms. Parents, local businesses and civic organizations play an active role in supporting the district, creating a strong foundation for student success. This collective commitment is what makes Brainerd Public Schools truly special.
For over 150 years, the district has prioritized excellence in education, and the results speak for themselves. The investment in learning and preparation for the next level is evident in the achievements of students past and present, shaping not only individual lives but also strengthening the entire community.

From an outsider’s perspective, Brainerd Public Schools stands out not just because of its accomplishments, but because of its people. Students, educators, staff, volunteers, families and community leaders work together to create something truly remarkable.
The future is bright for the students here. And I am incredibly lucky to witness it.

I drove through roads both far and near,
Exploring a district held so dear.
Schools and centers stood with pride,
A legacy shining far and wide.
From halls where little footsteps tread,
To classrooms where young minds are fed.
Teachers guiding, hands held high,
Dreams take shape, they start to fly.

Helping others, answering calls.
Staff and students dance and sing,
Welcoming joy that mornings bring.
Parents smile, their trust is strong,
Knowing here their kids belong.
Principals lead, teachers inspire,
Fueling hearts with learning's fire.

On playground swings, joy takes wings.
Through music, gym, and stories told,
A love for learning does unfold.
Lost one day, a child appeared,
Guiding me with words sincere.
Proud ambassadors, young yet wise,
Show their school through eager eyes.
Not just lessons, books, or art,
But love and care play their part.
A community united, hands extend,
Supporting schools like dearest friends.
A century and fifty years,
Of triumphs, progress, hopes, and cheers.
Brainerd Public Schools’ heart beats strong and true,

And as I stand, no longer new,
I see the greatness shining through.
Not just success, not just acclaim,
But people—hearts that light the flame.
