Board of Education Appointment Process

Process for Appointment to the ISD 181 Board of Education Position - 2021

This timeline and process are a result of the sudden resignation of Bob Nystrom, long-time Board of Education member. Bob’s resignation is effective 10/10/2021 and an appointment for replacement will be made by the current Board of Education from installation through December 31, 2022. This seat will then be filled during the election process beginning in January 2023 for a two-year term completed in December 2024. Election for this two-year position will be deemed a special election that will take place simultaneously as the general election.

Timeline for Appointment Process:

October 11, 2021 @ 6 p.m. Resolution to Approve the Resignation of Bob Nystrom from the ISD 181 Board of Education - Thank you Bob for your dedicated service to Brainerd Public Schools. Review and approval of the process guidelines - Regular School Board meeting
October 12, 2021 Applications available at the District Office - Janet Horn
October 20, 2021 Completed Applications are due at District Office - Janet Horn
October 21, 2021 Application Packets administered to Board Members for review. Applications may be assigned a letter/number in which to be referred.
October 25, 2021 @ 6 p.m. Regular School Board Meeting to review applications and the board will choose up to six individuals to be interviewed.
October 27, 2021 @ 4-8 p.m. School Board Meeting: Interviews in the WESB Boardroom - Up to 30 minutes will be allowed for each interview. Following the Interviews, the Board of Education members will each vote for her/his Top Appointment Choice and Supt. Larson will announce the Appointee. (If all candidates have been interview)
November 3, 2021 @ 4-8 p.m. Alternative Interview Date, only if needed.
November 8, 2021@ 6 p.m. Installation of the newly appointed Board of Education Member

Interview questions are to be forwarded to Janet Horn in the district office and will be compiled for Board review. All candidates will be asked the same set of questions during the interview process. Background checks will be completed and the appointment will be confirmed upon completion of the background check.
