Back in February, during the very depths of our cold and snowy winter, students at Brainerd High School began the work of putting together a musical, "Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat." The cast, tech crew and pit orchestra members have been working diligently to prepare for the first all-music musical in the school's recent history. Along with my colleagues Brian Stubbs and Spencer Frie, it has been my pleasure to work with an amazing group of students who are so dedicated to taking on this theatrical challenge and sharing it with the community.
The Biblical story revolves around Joseph and his brothers. Joseph's brothers become jealous and angry at Joseph, and they sell him into slavery. The musical portrays Joseph's trials, tribulations, and his successes. The entire show is sung, so if you like singing and dancing, you will enjoy this musical! Famous songs in the musical include "Any Dream Will Do," "Close Every Door," and "Go, Go Joseph."
Perhaps you are wondering why we put all this time and effort into producing plays. It all comes back to the tagline that is at the core of all we at brainerd Public Schools: opportunity, innovation and success. Productions like this and the others we put on throughout the school year and summer provide the opportunity for our theatrically-inclined students to express themselves both on and behind the stage. It gives them a positive outlet for their passion and flare for drama. Theatre allows students to create innovative works of art using their voices, body language, costumes and sets to bring stories to life. Seeing a show through from auditions to final curtain call will leave participants with a whole new feeling of accomplishment and success.
Brainerd High School Theatre will be performing "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" 7 p.m. from May 2-4, and 2 p.m. May 5 at Tornstrom Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for students and seniors, and $7 for adults. All tickets can be purchased at the door an hour prior to the show. The music from the show is by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the lyrics are written by Tim Rice.
This show runs just over an hour and is appropriate for all age levels. Come support these talented students!
